Summary

Everything you believe about how to lose weight is wrong。 Weight gain and obesity are driven by hormones—in everyone—and only by understanding the effects of insulin and insulin resistance can we achieve lasting weight loss。

In this highly readable and provocative book, Dr。 Jason Fung sets out an original, robust theory of obesity that provides startling insights into proper nutrition。 In addition to his five basic steps, a set of lifelong habits that will improve your health and control your insulin levels, Dr。 Fung explains how to use intermittent fasting to break the cycle of insulin resistance and reach a healthy weight—for good。

I skipped the first part of this book because it was about the medical and social causes of obesity, which weren't really of interest to me。 The latter part was what I was really looking for and what the book is known for -- he was one of the first people to question the high carb diets taught in the 80s and 90s and suggest full-fat, protein-based diets。 He also promises to "keep the weight off"。 Such a big promise deserved scrutiny! Essentially, Fung recommends a moderate diet of low-carb, moderate protein, moderate fat diet with regular vinegar and fermented food intake and regular exercise。 I would describe this recommendation as -- 100% on trend for the current moment。 It is an evidence-based, highly scientific approach to eating, that is refreshingly less extreme than Paleo, Keto, etc but still based in all the failings of the health industry (food with no cultural or spiritual grounding, just a hodge podge of random science with a sprinkle of hippie dust)。 The book reads like a peer reviewed paper and occasionally self aware diet book。 Not a bad read but probably better skipped for most people! 。。。more

This book explains why my own personal path trying to achieve weight loss has failed and offers a different focus on lowering insulin and cortisol levels instead of counting calories or eating low fat。 I am not sure about fasting but I do plan to give it a try and hopefully I will update my review after I have more personal experience with the fasting recommendations in this book。

Informative, interesting, direct and even funny at times。

Dr。 Fung is a breath of fresh air。 It feels like a very “back to basics” approach。 He is major sassafras and calls out what he calls stupid government imposed “dietary guidelines” that have literally never worked to address the obesity epidemic since it’s release 50 years ago。 Its continued use today is evidence that the guidelines are all politics and big money。 “Why would anybody give such asinine advice? Because nobody makes any money if you eat less [and don’t eat their product]” p 129。 I re Dr。 Fung is a breath of fresh air。 It feels like a very “back to basics” approach。 He is major sassafras and calls out what he calls stupid government imposed “dietary guidelines” that have literally never worked to address the obesity epidemic since it’s release 50 years ago。 Its continued use today is evidence that the guidelines are all politics and big money。 “Why would anybody give such asinine advice? I had no idea insulin was so important。 In short, avoid sugar (including corn syrup which has fructose in it), no snacking, and do intermittent fasting。 An excellent read。

I plan to read this again and again—solid, logical advice with scientific explanations。 It upends the USDA food pyramid and shares basic and easy to execute strategies。 Highly recommend。 Some sections did get overly technical for me。 I listened to the book and that helped me get through those parts。

While I enjoyed Dr。 Fung’s message, it felt like it took a long time to get to the main point。 Overall it was a valuable read, but I felt like it could have been structured better。 I really wanted to hear his thoughts on intermittent fasting but it took 90% of the book to get to that point。

A lot of research, but presented in a fun way to listen。 Goes over many subjects and the author managed to cut my sugar intake。 It's been a week and the weight just drops off :D A lot of research, but presented in a fun way to listen。 Goes over many subjects and the author managed to cut my sugar intake。 It's been a week and the weight just drops off :D 。。。more

I’m not obese (not meant as humble brag!) just interested in the scientific mechanisms behind obesity, and especially related to diabetes and kidney failure。 This was such an accessible look at what goes on in those conditions and how it builds up over time。 Intermittent fasting appears to be key, and just anecdotally, the periods in my life when I intermittently fasted by accident (usually because of being busy with work) led to the biggest weight losses while I felt the best - the most energy, I’m not obese (not meant as humble brag!) just interested in the scientific mechanisms behind obesity, and especially related to diabetes and kidney failure。 This was such an accessible look at what goes on in those conditions and how it builds up over time。 Intermittent fasting appears to be key, and just anecdotally, the periods in my life when I intermittently fasted by accident (usually because of being busy with work) led to the biggest weight losses while I felt the best - the most energy, mental clarity, no diet-typical crankiness。 As he points out throughout, that tends to be the case。 And so much of what we’ve learned is total myth - that a big breakfast is a must, more frequent small meals are ideal, you’ll overeat after a fast and ruin the effects, it’ll screw with your metabolism, etc。 Too many of our long held but not scientifically sound beliefs have just been leading straight to insulin resistance, and that’s the big bad one we should avoid at all costs。 I did cringe a couple of times, once when he used the word “detoxify” (not a thing, and it misleads people to think that it is and that there’s something they should do to accomplish it, but I get what he means - that feeling after a fast of having washed out some of what’s gunking you up) and a few times when he leans too heavily on correlation as causation to make some points。 But he does say that there’s still a lot to learn, and there’s absolutely no arguing that insulin and cortisol cause weight gain。 So the good outweighs the bad by far。 He’s a perfect science communicator too, as this was clearly written and completely understandable in conveying those concepts。 Diet/weight loss books are not at all my thing but this doesn’t read like one - reads more like pop science - and really helpful in general。 。。。more

I’m guessing that if everyone read this, obesity would disappear and life expectancy would increase。 Truly enlightening。

Good all-around book built on scientific studies。Much talk about insulin and insulin resistance。 I was personally interested because I think this sort of thing has an impact AND I think that intermittent fasting (as he suggests) would be an easy and effective way for me to eat (or not eat, as the case may be。。。) going forward。

This book was FASCINATING! I feel like I learned so much; at times it was a bit too "sciency," but it was all very interesting。 The book was about the science of obesity and the science of eating and how food interacts with your body。 It wasn't about selling a fad diet。 I really liked reading this book。 This book was FASCINATING! I checked this out of the library but I think I will end up purchasing it。 Unlike fad diet books which try to sell the reader a new and branded concoction this is a work of pure scholarship, designed to unravel the medical causes and subsequent treatments for obesity。 Fung presents centuries of research and data in a way accessible to the average reader。 As a newly-diagnosed LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes Adult Onset) patient I came to this book with deep discouragement and despair。 The detail I checked this out of the library but I think I will end up purchasing it。 Unlike fad diet books which try to sell the reader a new and branded concoction this is a work of pure scholarship, designed to unravel the medical causes and subsequent treatments for obesity。 Fung presents centuries of research and data in a way accessible to the average reader。 As a newly-diagnosed LADA (Latent Autoimmune Diabetes Adult Onset) patient I came to this book with deep discouragement and despair。 The detailed scholarship herein gave me hope and courage and I use it daily to manage my diabetes。 。。。more

🤯🤯🤯 I’d already given up “dieting” a few years ago - but this book confirmed every sneaking suspicion I had about diets and so called nutritional advice。 I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever been caught in the diet cycle or whose weight seems to keep creeping up no matter what she does。 I’ve literally tried it all - this book give me fresh perspective and hope。 Pretty heavy on science and a little light on application - but let’s be honest。 We knew all along what we were s 🤯🤯🤯 I’d already given up “dieting” a few years ago - but this book confirmed every sneaking suspicion I had about diets and so called nutritional advice。 I highly, highly recommend this book to anyone who has ever been caught in the diet cycle or whose weight seems to keep creeping up no matter what she does。 I’ve literally tried it all - this book give me fresh perspective and hope。 Pretty heavy on science and a little light on application - but let’s be honest。 We knew all along what we were supposed to be eating, right? 。。。more
